Alcohol Ban Destroying Bars And Nightclubs In Bangkok

The now seven-month ban on the serving of alcoholic beverages was imposed to curb the coronavirus, leaving pub and bar owners with no way to make ends meet.

Having no government support and constant postponements of re-opening efforts many businesses have had to be creative, some even breaking the rules to make money. The rules have dealt death blows to many establishments forcing them to shut their doors permanently. Others have been nimble using other creative legal business practices to stay open.

Kratom Mocktails Instead Of Cocktails

Teens, a cocktail bar on the fringe of Bangkok's Chinatown has reopened at 60 percent capacity serving mocktails made with kratom, a leaf from the coffee family long used in parts of Southeast Asia as a mild stimulant.

Kratom stimulates the same brain receptors as morphine but with much milder effects. Kratom was taken off the Thai government's banned list in August.

One has to question why alcohol is even banned or for that matter, what effect does banning its sales and use have on curbing the spread of coronavirus? Inquiring minds would like to see the rationale and any studies which support this.
